The Citizenship Ceremony
Most Australian Citizenship ceremonies are held at your local town hall and are usually organised by the Mayor’s office. You will receive a letter from the Immigration Department to tell you when and where your ceremony will be held. Australian Citizenship ceremonies are friendly events where you celebrate becoming an Australian Citizen. You can invite your family and friends to celebrate your citizenship with you.
You become an Australian Citizen at your ceremony when you make the Australian citizenship pledge. The pledge reads:
From this time forward, under God
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people
whose Democratic beliefs I share
whose rights and liberties I respect
and whose laws I will uphold and obey
New Australian citizens can choose to take the pledge in the form of an oath, which includes the words 'under God', or in the form of an affirmation, which does not.
The Affirmation of Australian Citizenship reads:
As an Australian citizen,
I affirm my loyalty to Australia and its people,
Whose democratic beliefs I share,
Whose rights and liberties I respect,
And whose laws I uphold and obey.
Once you have made the pledge or affirmation you will be given your certificate of Australian Citizenship. The certificate is provided to all new Australian citizens as legal proof of their Australian Citizenship.
